I’m sure he would like to welcome all of humanity into his fold, but that doesn’t mean those of other religions or no religion find this particular image of a torture device a “welcoming symbol of unity”!
I can’t believe someone actually needs to say this, but just because Christianity has impacted Europe does not mean that its religious icons (and as a former student of a Catholic school, we definitely prayed to the crucifix) can be in public school classrooms! Islam “impacted” Europe too, and so did tear gas — but you don’t see crescent moons and gas masks on classroom walls.
