A Vatican spokesman, Federico Lombardi, said the crucifix was a fundamental sign of the importance of religious values in Italian history and culture, and was a symbol of unity and welcoming for all of humanity, not one of exclusion. … “It seems as if the court wanted to ignore the role of Christianity in forming Europe’s identity, which was and remains essential,” he added.

Hahahaha

I’m sure he would like to welcome all of humanity into his fold, but that doesn’t mean those of other religions or no religion find this particular image of a torture device a “welcoming symbol of unity”!

I can’t believe someone actually needs to say this, but just because Christianity has impacted Europe does not mean that its religious icons (and as a former student of a Catholic school, we definitely prayed to the crucifix) can be in public school classrooms! Islam “impacted” Europe too, and so did tear gas — but you don’t see crescent moons and gas masks on classroom walls.
